Symptoms at onset
In mild cases of encephalitis, symptoms may resemble the flu. In severe cases, symptoms may include some or all of the following:

- Confusion or disorientation
- Extreme fatigue
- Headache
- Lack of concentration
- Loss of consciousness
- Muscle weakness
- Rash
- Seizures
- Stiff neck and back
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Coma
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Fever
- Inability to emote
- Lethargy and reduced consciousness
- Memory loss (short-term or long-term)
- Partial paralysis
- Sensitivity to light and/or sound
- Speech, hearing and vision problems
- Tingling and numbness
- Hallucinations
